'Amber treasure...'

'Amber treasure...'

Close-up of an insect that walked this planet millions of years ago and got trapped in tree sap that then fossilized, and turned into amber.

This piece comes from the Chiapas region of Mexico, where incredible and amazing things are regularly found entombed inside amber. Chiapas amber comes from the process of the fossilization of the tree resin of the Hymenaea Leguminoseae tree and is between 22 million and 26 million years ago.

In this photo the amber is lit from the front to show the detail of the insect.

I took this photograph, and is reproduced with the kind permission of a private collector from Mexico.
